Ghostlight Theatre Troupe Opens ‘Belfast Girls’; Real/Time Interventions Debuts with ‘Angelmakers’ (Wed., 10/25/17)

1) Many Irish women (and men) were forced to seek new lives in other lands due to hardships in their homeland. Some came to America; others went to different  countries, including Australia. Belfast Girls chronicles five women of the street orphaned by the great potato famine of 1850 as they embark on a journey that stirs a wave of rollicking emotions. Belfast Girls was written by Jaki McCarrick, an award-winning playwright who developed the play at the National Theatre in London. It is based on actual women passengers aboard the Australia-bound ship Inchinnan. The play was premiered in Chicago in 2015 by Artemisia Theatre. It’s presented here by Ghostlight Theatre Troupe, a newer company under the direction of English-born Rich Kenzie, whose goal in starting the company was to give more opportunities to the fine acting talent we have in the region. 8 p.m. Continues through October 29. Carnegie Stage, 25 W. Main St., Carnegie.

2) People are fascinated with murder. Just take a look at all the television programs whose plot revolves around a chalk outline. Now Real/Time Interventions is getting into the game with its inaugural production, Angelmakers: Songs for Female Serial Killers. Not only is it a play about murder but it is also a musical. The production is a cabaret style show that examines the motives and emotions of female serial killers from the 1500’s to the present. Angelmakers features songs by Molly Rice, direction by Rusty Thelin, and performance by Milia Ayache. The company promises “part pop/rock, part country, all killer songs.” And they will be with Pittsburgh’s Murder for Girls’ drummer Michele Dunlap keeping the beat in the show’s band. 8 p.m. Performances through November 11. The play is being staged at Aftershock Theatre in Lawrenceville. 115 57th Street.
