Big Local Band Night at Lava Lounge; “My Fair Lady” Holds Court at The Public (CPs Thurs., 1/29/15)

1) Lava Lounge offers a triumvirate of local music groups this evening. Grand Bell chimes with not one but two pairs of brothers. Such fraternity makes for tight-knit instrumentation, as this track from their forthcoming album demonstrates. They’ve released two other LPs under their former moniker, Race the Ghost. The second group—Murder for Girls, is a punk/riot/grrrl four-piece. They’ve released one EP and were included in the 2015 Pittsburgh Calendar Comp, a calendar/12-inch vinyl pairing that features 12 local musicians. The Park Plan round out the line-up for tonight, blending socially conscientious lyrics with a sound reminiscent of surf rock and ’90s indie. Although new to the scene, they’ve already played a handful of shows since making their live debut in November ’14. Support local musicians while also taking in the cavernous decor of one of the South Side’s best spots. 10 p.m. 2204 E. Carson St.

2) There aren’t many musicals better known or loved than My Fair Lady by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe. Nor are there heroines more captivating than the show’s Eliza Doolittle—a Cockney flower girl who learns to be a cultivated lady, then turns the tables on her teacher, Professor Henry Higgins. That’s why Pittsburgh Public Theater chose the 1956 Broadway classic as the musical entry for its 40th anniversary “Season of Legends.” The Public’s My Fair Lady features all the songs that are classics in their own right: “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly?” “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “On the Street Where You Live,” “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face,” and more. 8 p.m. Through Feb. 22. O’Reilly Theater, 621 Penn Ave., Cultural District.

3) Wild opened recently in theaters nationally and features Reese Witherspoon. She stars in this true story about Cheryl Strayed, a hot mess of a heroin addict who decides to start life anew by walking the 1,100 mile Pacific Crest Trail. Witherspoon has been nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Actress category for this role. Check Fandango for times and locations.
