“Christmas Star” Continues to Shine at PPTCO; Club Cafe Hosts Brooke Annibale Show (CPs Sat., 12/27/14)

1) Christmas Star by Ray Werner is now playing at the Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Co. What does a family Christmas gathering mean for a war veteran? If dad is a Vietnam vet and his sonChristmas Star Image Art 2 was in the Iraq war, the interchange that they have leads into a deeper question: What does life itself mean for a war veteran? Christmas Star’s playwright, Ray Werner, was once a well-known creative director at a Pittsburgh ad agency and is currently embarked on a range of second careers. Werner first wrote the play as a one-act for PPTCO’s 2013 Theatre Festival in Black and White. Now fleshed out to full length, Christmas Star runs through Dec. 28. 2 p.m. today. 937 Liberty Ave., Cultural District.

2) Pittsburgh native singer/songwriter Brooke Annibale brings her acoustic, pop folk sound to the early show at Club Cafe. Annibale is touring in support of her latest album Words in Your Eyes, in which she explores new electronic orchestrations combined with sharp, crisp lyrics and wrapped in a framework of ambient sounds. Several of her songs have been used on TV series including “One Tree Hill” and “The Vampire Diaries.” Tonight’s show is a trio performance with Seth Pierson on bass and Dan Harding on drums. Special guest is Kevin Garrett. 7 p.m. 56-58 S. 12th St., South Side.

3) Mr. Small’s Funhouse is holding the Punk The Halls Xmas Party Show featuring Katie Hate, Scene Stage The World, Fiveunder, A Lovely Crisis, Harbours, and Anthony Sarnelli. Make sure to attend and work off some post-holiday calories and angst. 6:30 p.m. 400 Lincoln ave., Millvale.

4) Our Pens, recovering from some mumps and holiday feasting, take on the Washington Capitals in a 7:30 p.m. game at Consol Energy Center.
