Cool Picks – Tuesday June 5, 2012

  1.  It’s a Tuesday and one of the most happening places in town continues to be Point State Park and The Three Rivers Arts Festival. One especially great aspect of the festival is the waste receptacles. Artists using reclaimed materials have transformed ordinary waste cans into works of art!  3Rs: the Art of Reuse, Recycle and Repurpose is the name of the exhibit.  The artistic receptacles can be enjoyed throughout the festival and in the Cultural District. The festival diverts over 80% of it’s waste from going into landfills. Hopefully, this exhibit will inspire more people not to  litter!
  2. Festival food pick #1, Grilled Hot Sausage with peppers and onions.  The aroma of the Italian sausage, peppers and onions grilling is hard to beat.
  3. Festival food pick #2, the festival’s gyros are some of the best around! The gyro is a perfect festival food. It’s easy to hold and contains all of the four major food groups.  If you want something more decadent and fattening look for any booth with a deep fryer.
  4. LA based, Dawes, is the festival’s main musical act. Dawes is comprised of four friends who like writing songs and playing  music together. They describe themselves as an “American rock ‘n’ roll band.” Show starts at 8 pm.
  5. At the Benedum Center in the Cultural District, it’s opening night for the CLO’s run of the Twyla Tharp musical, Come Fly Away. The production is based on the ups and downs of four couples woven together in a rich tapestry of Frank Sinatra songs.
