Cool Picks Wednesday July 4, 2012 – Independence Day

1) Some people go “cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs,” in Pittsburgh we go “hilly-dilly” for fireworks. One of America’s ten biggest fireworks displays  is blasting off over the confluence of the Three Rivers at Point State Park for the EQT Three Rivers Regatta “Flashes of Freedom” Fireworks Fantasia. Check them out from your favorite perch or porch. 9:35 p.m.

2) In addition to all the fun events at the EQT Three Rivers Regatta today, two Pittsburgh classic events are occurring – The Anything that Floats contest and the Pittsburgh Dragon Boat Races. The Anything That Floats contest features some of the most creative, but barely seaworthy water craft you’ll ever see.  The “sailors” are often in themed outfits as well, 10 a.m. The Dragon Boat Races features majestic 44 foot boats with dragon heads on the front, powered by the strength of their crews, 8 a.m.

3) In conjunction with the EQT Three Rivers Regatta the Rivers Casino proudly hosts the classic pop rock band, America. In the 70’s the radio was filled with their hits including: “Horse With No Name”,” Ventura Highway” and “Sister Golden Hair”. Rivers Casino Amphitheater, 8 p.m.

4) Big Butler Fair continues with rides, food, attractions, animal judging contests including today’s, Judging Rabbit Showmanship and the U.S. Freestyle Motocross Championship Series.

5) If you live to the East and don’t want to cross any bridge or go through a tunnel to see fireworks, Monroeville is shooting off their colorful display at Monroeville Mall, 9:30 p.m.
