“ER” Actress/Singer Gloria Reuben Plays South Park; (Josh) Wolf at Improv’s Door (CPs Fri., 8/22/14)

1) Gloria Reuben, best known for her long-running role as physician assistant Jeanie Boulet on the NBC hit “ER,” is also an accomplished singer. Her mother is a classically trained vocalist, and Reuben, who began playing piano at a young age, studied music, ballet, and jazz at the Canadian Royal Conservatory. Rueben’s Just for You is a high-quality album that touches on pop, soul, and smooth jazz, all beautifully unified by her crystalline voice. Other interesting aspects of Reuben’s life are that she was voted one of People magazine’s Most Beautiful People in 1996, sang back-up vocals on Tina Turner’s Twenty Four Seven tour in 2000, and portrayed Mary Todd Lincoln’s seamstress Elizabeth Keckley in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln. Reuben will be at South Park Amphitheater for a free concert with the Caribbean Jazz Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. Brownsville and McCorkle roads, South Park.

2) Josh Wolf is a quick-witted comedian who’s been recognized for his contributions to comedy round tables, including Chelsea Handler’s “Chelsea Lately.” He’s also contributed to Handler’s book Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me. The book made the New York Times Best Sellers list. After the success of his book with Handler, he landed his own deal for It Takes Balls: Dating Single Moms and Other Confessions from an Unprepared Single Dad, published in 2013. Wolf was also a frequent tour headliner with comedian Larry the Cable Guy and played a recurring character (Josh) on the NBC TV sitcom “My Name Is Earl.” Actor Scott Wolf, on Fox’s “Party of Five,” is a cousin. Pittsburgh Improv, 8 and 10:15 p.m.; shows through Sunday. 166 E.Bridge Street, The Waterfront, Homestead.

3) Rick Jergel is the co-owner of Jergel’s Rhythm Grille and lead singer of the house band, Fathertime. The venue, created to provide Pittsburgh’s northern suburbs with a solid concert hall and hang-out spot, plays host to local and touring acts, but Fathertime is no slouch when it fills in the gaps, bringing the heat with enthusiastic renditions of Top 40 favorites. A complimentary shuttle service is available by appointment for groups of 8 to 10 within a 10-mile radius of the venue. 9 p.m. 285 Northgate Dr., Warrendale.
