Comedian Dave Coulier Headlines Pittsburgh Improv (CP’s Sat. 8/31/13)

1) You probably remember him as the lovable yet wacky friend Joey on “Full House,” but Dave Coulier is a lot funnier than his “cut-it-out” bit on that show. Since his run on the ABC sitcom, Coulier has appeared on VH-1’s “The Surreal Life,” as well as hosted two seasons of “America’s Most Talented Kids.” Well known for his impersonations, he’s the voice behind Waldorf and Statler in Jim Henson’s “Muppet Babies.” His stand-up has earned him spots on “The Tonight Show,” HBO’s Detroit Comedy Jam, and HBO’s Comic Relief. In the midst of such a busy schedule, Coulier is making an appearance at the Pittsburgh Improv. There are two shows tonight, at 7 and 9 p.m. 166 E. Bridge St., West Homestead.

2) Everyone is welcome at the St. Mary Ukrainian Festival in McKees Rocks. You don’t have to be Ukrainian like this writer to enjoy a night of entertainment, games, and ultimate comfort foods. Try some pirohyhalushki, or halupki made by the church babas (grandmothers), who won’t let you leave hungry. Entertainment includes the Lyman Ukrainian Dance Group and The CT Drifters. Don’t forget to pick up some cookies before you leave! 4 – 11 p.m. St. Mary Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 116 Ella St., McKees Rocks.

2) Think Downtown Pittsburgh is dead after regular business hours? Haunted PittsburghDowntown Ghost Tour may cause you to rethink that notion. On this walking tour, you’ll pass buildings you may have seen a hundred times before without knowing about their ghostly pasts. Haunted Pittsburgh researches the history behind these spine-tingling tales as well as interviews individuals who work within the haunted buildings. Organizers will tell you that “the truth is scarier than anything we could make up!” But buy your tickets online because tour guides can’t accept cash. 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through October. City-County Building, 414 Grant St., Downtown.

3) Our Pirates take on the St. Louis Cardinals at PNC Park. Stick around after the game for “Skyblast,” which features Zambelli Fireworks and 90’s rockers Third Eye Blind. 7:05 p.m. 115 Federal St., North Shore.

4) Can’t wait for college football to start? Wait no more! The Duquesne Dukes host their season opener against Albany at Rooney Field. Cheer on some amazing local talent, including Tim Wood (North Catholic), Jake Szolis (Avonworth), and Tommy Berexa (Pine-Richland). It’s a great year to be a Duke! 12:10 p.m. 600 Forbes Ave., Uptown.

5) Ska music makes a comeback at the Altar Bar with Masters of the Universe. In case you forgot, ska blends alternative rock, blues, jazz, and just a dash of punk in a recipe for fun. Masters of the Universe is an eight-piece band featuring brass and saxophone sounds reminiscent of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Sublime. Opening acts include The Pressure and Hey Compadre. 8 p.m. 1620 Penn Ave., Strip District.

6) Labor Day weekend marks the 20th Annual Pennsylvania Arts & Crafts Colonial Festival, and it’s happening right in your back yard, at the Westmoreland County Fairgrounds. Step back in time, and you’ll see crafts in more than 220 booths. There are historic floral designs, clothing, jewelry, stained glass, and plenty more. Enjoy musical performances by Beaver Creek, Acoustic Shadows of the Blue & Gray, and the Westland Flute Choir. Bring the kids, too—there will be colonial clowns, face painting, and plenty of kid-friendly entertainment! 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 2. 123 Blue Ribbon Ln., Greensburg.
