’13 Most Wanted Men’ At the Warhol; MCG Jazz Hosts Grammy Winner Patti Austin (CPs Sat., 9/27/14)

1) Two new exhibits are opening today at the Warhol Museum. 13 Most Wanted Men: Andy Warhol and the 1964 World’s Fair chronicles a minor crisis the artist created at that fair, which was held in New York City. Warhol had been commissioned to provide art work for the New York Pavilion. What he chose to do was to enlarge front- and side-view mug shots of 13 most wanted criminals from a NYPD booklet, forming a massive panel on the pavilion’s exterior. Fair officials were none too happy about this controversial art and painted over it with silver paint. Warhol revived his piece that same year by producing 20 Most Wanted Men paintings on smaller canvases, using the same screens with which he made the World’s Fair installation. Runs through January 4.

Another show opening today at The Warhol is Chuck Connelly: My America. As part of the current Pittsburgh Biennial, the museum is presenting a selection of works by Connelly, a noted neo-Expressionist painter who was born in Pittsburgh, studied at Philadelphia’s Tyler School, rose to fame in the New York City art world, and now lives and paints back in Philadelphia. His striking works deal with a vast range of subject matter. You’ll find religious imagery and cosmic visions mixed with still lifes of breakfast cereal and home interiors, as well as portraits, landscapes, and street scenes. Continues through January 4. The Warhol, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. 117 Sandusky St., North Shore.

2) Grammy Award-winning vocalist Patti Austin is in concert tonight for the latest installment of MCG Jazz. Austin’s music draws from many different genres. A daring re-imagining of George Gershwin’s work, Avant Gershwin, won the Grammy in 2008 for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Born in Harlem, Austin had an early start in music; her father, Gordon Austin, was a jazz trombonist and she is the goddaughter of musical legends Quincy Jones and Dinah Washington. At the age of four she performed at Harlem’s Apollo Theater with Washington. In the late 1960s she was a session musician and wrote jingles, including some for Burger King, McDonald’s, Stouffer’s, Maxwell House, and Almay make-up. Austin and James Ingram had a Grammy-nominated hit in ’82 with “Baby, Come to Me,” which reached no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary charts. 6 and 8:30 p.m. Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild, 1815 Metropolitan St., Manchester.

3) The Ying Yang Twins are not really twins, they are an Atlanta hip-hop duo consisting of Kaine (Eric Jackson) and D-Roc (De’Angelo Holmes). The Twins broke on the scene in 2000 when their hot single “Whistle While You Twurk” shot to no. 17 on the US R&B/Hip-Hop chart. They continued to build audience and sales with good-time party songs like “Salt Shaker” featuring Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz. The Twins are part of the southern crunk rap sub-genre. They are appearing in Pittsburgh under the CRUNK AS F$CK banner, and there’s a $100 prize for the best twerker. 8 p.m. Rex Theater. 1602 E. Carson St., South Side.

4) The Columbus Blue Jackets take on our Pens in a 4 p.m. preseason game at the Consol Center. With an early game you can still head out for a night of fun afterward. Hopefully, celebrating a victory! 1001 Fifth Ave, Uptown.

5) The Pitt Panthers are coming off a disappointing loss in which the Iowa Hawkeyes overcame a 10-point deficit in the second half to win. Standing in their way to becoming 4-1 this week are the Akron Zips. The Panthers are a very young team and are striving to win the ACC championship. Head coach of the Zips is Terry Bowden, son of the legendary Florida State coach Bobby Bowden. 1:30 p.m. Heinz Field. 100 Art Rooney Ave., North Shore.

6) There’s a lot happening at Hartwood Acres park today with the Allegheny Green + Innovation Festival, a zero-waste event, includes earth-friendly food and product vendors, crafters, children’s activities and green-living demos. There’s even a hand-made, recycled materials costume parade. 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Additionally occurring at Hartwood is Hay Day, fall fun for the family with hay rides, face painting, petting zoo, arts and crafts, and performances. 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Both events are free. 200 Hartwood Acres, Hampton and Indiana townships.
