Frampton Plays the Palace; Yonder Mountain String Rolls Into AE (CPs Wed., 7/9/14)

1) The year was 1976, the U.S.’s bicentennial, but an Englishman was ruling America’s radio airwaves. Peter Frampton was that man. Formerly of the English group Humble Pie, Frampton embarked on his own in 1971 and recorded four albums before his 1976 release of Frampton Comes Alive!  which dropped several songs that burned their way up America’s rock charts, especially  “Show Me the Way“, “Baby, I Love Your Way,” and “Do You Feel Like We Do.” The album became the top-selling up to that point, and has been certified platinum six times. Since then, Frampton has had some missteps and dormant periods, but he’s managed to remain relevant by continuing to write, record, and perform great music. It also doesn’t hurt that he appeared as himself on Fox’s “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy.” 8 p.m. Palace Theatre, 21 W. Otterman St., Greensburg.

2) Progressive bluegrass group Yonder Mountain String Band is in concert tonight at Stage AE. Colorado, now a major producer of “green” grass, also grew this blue grass band, who has five studio albums to their credit. “Half Moon Rising” is one of their most popular songs and resonates with joyful sounds. Railroad Earth co-headlines this show; special guests are Jake Jolliff and Allie Kral. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. 400 North Shore Dr., North Shore.

3) Don’t be a “hayseed.” Get on over to Peter’s Pub for country music night with DJ JB. Check out their great specials: $5.50 fish bowls, $7.50 Smirnoff fish bowls, $2 Yuengling bottles (10 p.m. – midnight), $5.50 Bud Lt. pitchers (7 p.m. to close), and, if you want to add some protein to the picture, $5 sandwiches ( 5 – 10 p.m.). 116 Oakland Ave., Oakland.
