Jukebox the Ghost Appears at Mr. Smalls; Tar Heels vs. Panthers (CPs Sat., 2/14/15)

1) If you recently “let go,” “are on your own,” or simply don’t have a Valentine today, Jukebox the Ghost will be at Mr. Smalls to reassure you that “there’s something waiting for you / in the great unknown.” These lyrics come from the group’s mega-uplifting single “The Great Unknown,” off 2014’s album Jukebox the Ghost. The power pop trio got their start in D.C. and average 150 shows a year. They’ve opened for acts like Ben Folds and Motion City Soundtrack and, in 2010, made a coveted appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman. Couples are welcome to tonight’s show, too, of course, but men, be warned—the members of Jukebox the Ghost are not only accomplished musicians but also are intimidatingly good-looking. Little Daylight and Secret Someones open. 8 p.m. 400 Lincoln Ave., Millvale.

2) The scrappy Pitt Panthers basketball team keep fighting tooth and claw to find a way to achieve victory, as they did against Syracuse last Saturday. Despite being down most of the game the Panthers played well as a team and eeked out the victory. another big test is today against the North Carolina Tar Heels. Jump ball is at noon. 3719 Terrace St., Oakland.

3) Bon ton roulet is the French phrase for “Let the good times roll,” and that is exactly what happens during the night-time hours of Shadyside’s Le Mardi Gras, which bills itself as a Hysterical Landmark Since 1954. The bar is known for great cocktails, including New Orleans’ Hurricane with fresh-squeezed fruit and a nice assortment of beer and wine. The decor is French Quarter motif and slightly on the dark side, and that makes it perfect for a romantic evening or an illicit rendezvous. The bartenders are very friendly and knowledgeable. Le Mardi Gras is operated by Rich Costanza, who marks a second generation of ownership by the Costanza family. His father, Joe, some called him Papa Joe, was an affable, beloved Shadyside character who was always working a cigar. 2 p.m. – 2 a.m. 731 Copeland St.
