Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings Pump Up the Byham; Pirates Memorabilia Takes Over Heinz History Center (CPs Sun., 4/13/14)

1) Feed your soul with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings at the Byham Theater. Formed in the mid-1990s, the band wanted to revitalize the soul and funk music that peaked in the ’60s and ’70s. Rich vocals and full-bodied instrumentals allow for the genre comeback for which we’ve been waiting since the days of the Temptations. Keeping classic riffs and adding modern twists in songs like “Stranger to My Happiness” gives audiences the nostalgia of their youth with the wisdom of age. Pretty groovy, indeed! 8 p.m. 101 6th St., Cultural District.

2) Relive the excitement of one of the greatest games in baseball history with Mazeroski Artifacts from the 1960 World Series at the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum, inside the Heinz History Center. Other than last year’s brief stint at PNC Park, Mazeroski’s famed Pirates uniform and bat heard ’round the world haven’t seen a local crowd since that fateful day at Forbes Field. In addition to Mazeroski’s belongings, you can see other memorabilia including Dick Groat’s jersey from his 1960 MVP season, and the pitching rubber and first base from the iconic Game 7 of the Series. On display until May 1. 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. 1212 Smallman St., Strip District.

3) Sunday may be called a day of rest, but alt rockers X Ambassadors are throwing that mantra to the wind with a performance at Brillobox. Last year’s collaboration with Eminem on “Wicked Ways” from The Marshall Mathers LP 2 allowed the Ithaca, New York natives to appeal to a broader audience and gain more air play. Fresh off the tour bus as the opening act for Imagine Dragons, Jimmy Eat World, and the Mowglis, the band members are squeezing in a few headliner shows of their own before hitting the road again with Panic! At the Disco and Imagine Dragons later this year. With two EPs out in the last year, X Ambassadors produce a fresh and slightly mellower take on alternative music, as demonstrated by songs like “Unconsolable” and “Unsteady.” Special guests include Parade of Lights and These Lions. 9:30 p.m. 4104 Penn Ave., Lawrenceville.

4) It’s never too early to celebrate Earth Day and the Frick Environmental Center is showing its love for Mother Earth with free Nature Walks and Hikes throughout the day. Nature walks begin every hour and include a wide array of activities from flora and fauna identification, to family-friendly obstacle courses, to an age-appropriate reading of The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. These walks provide exercise, fresh air, and a new take on nature to help all of us be a little more environmentally minded. 12 – 4 p.m. 2005 Beechwood Blvd., Squirrel Hill.

5) It’s the last regular-season home game for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Enjoy one more bout of action as they take on the Ottawa Senators at Consol Energy Center. They’ll be making the transition into the playoffs, so cheer them on with a rousing “Let’s go Pens!” 7:30 p.m. 1001 Fifth Ave., Uptown.
