The Lumineers Play The Pete; Murder for Girls at The Rock Room (Tues., 3/14/17)

1) Denver-based folk rock band The Lumineers started out as a way to cope with the death of a loved one. Friends Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites began their musical collaboration as a way to cope with the death of  Josh Fraites, the brother of Jeremiah and best friend of Schultz, who died of a drug overdose in 2002. They started playing together in New Jersey in 2002 and then were joined by cellist and vocalist Neyla Pekarek in 2010, after responding to their ad on Craigslist. The group who started as a response to grief, creates an unique sound with songs such as their 2012 hit single “Hey Ho.” In 2013 they were nominated for Grammy Awards in the Best New Artist and Best Americana Album categories. They are currently touring in support of their 2016 album Cleopatra. The Lumineers will be back in town in a few months to open for U2 on their “The Joshua Tree” tour on June 7. Special guests are Kaleo and Susto. 7 p.m. Petersen Events Center, University of Pittsburgh, 3719 Terrace St., Oakland.

2) It’s Murder for Girls at The Rock Room in Polish Hill tonight. This punky, crunchy band is built upon the strong bass lines of bass guitarist Jonathan Bagamery, intense rhythmic drumming of Michele Dunlap, and dual guitar sound of Tammy Wallace and Stephanie Wallace and their harmonic, fast-paced vocals. Murder for Girls is active on the local scene and has drawn good crowds to their appearances at the Deutschtown Music Festival, RANT, and Ladyfest. Their latest release is All the Wishes. Look for the band to announce new dates soon. Opening is Mobina Galore. 9 p.m. 1054 Herron Ave.
