Comedian Tom Green at Pittsburgh Improv; Fair in the Park and Pittsburgh Irish Festival Open (Fri., 9/8/17)

1) If you came of age in the late ’90s and had cable in your home, you probably remember Tom Green humping a dead moose by the side of the road and sneaking a cow’s head into his sleeping parents’ bed. Green’s wildly popular MTV show invented the prank comedy genre that’s been the lifeblood of network shows like “Punk’d” and “Jackass.” Fame based on infamy is hard to maintain, and Green couldn’t readily pull stunts on an unsuspecting public while on magazine covers. But he’s been surprisingly smart and resilient for a guy known for rubbing his butt on things. Green has built a mini-empire of podcasts and other online media and has a respected stand-up career. He also has a namesake beer, a milk stout brewed by Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company. His three-day stint at the Improv starts today. 7:30 and 9:45 p.m. 166 E. Bridge St., Homestead.

2) The 48th annual A Fair in the Park opens today in Shadyside’s Mellon Park. Promoted as a contemporary fine crafts and arts show and sale, it includes performances, concerts, food, and children’s activities. The Fair is presented by the Craftsmen’s Guild of Pittsburgh and Citiparks. Today’s musical highlights include several concerts by performers from Calliope House, Pittsburgh’s Folk Music Society. Fair hours are 1 – 7 p.m. Free. Continues through Sunday. Fifth and Shady Aves., Shadyside/Point Breeze.

3) The 27th annual Pittsburgh Irish Festival opens at the Riverplex at Sandcastle. Great Irish musicians, dancers and performers play all day on several stages. Entertainment kicks off at 4 p.m. highlights include: Donnie Irish (6 p.m., Celtic Spirit Stage), Corned Beef and Curry (7:30 p.m., Celtic Spirit Stage), and Gaelic Storm (9:30 p.m., UPMC Stage). Plenty of Irish food will be on hand and can be washed down with Irish beers, ciders and whiskies. Remember everyone’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day and during the Pittsburgh Irish Festival. See our story on the 2015 Irish Festival. 4 p.m. – 11 p.m. Runs through Sunday. 1000 Sandcastle Dr., West Homestead.
