1) The U.S. Open returns to Oakmont Country for the 9th time in tournament history. The course is known to be tough on golfers including even the top pros. Jim Furyk who lived in the Pittsburgh region for a period while growing up is also on the roster. His father was the top pro at Uniontown Country Club. The Oakmont community is ready for its time in the limelight again, see our story on several Oakmont hotspots. Gates open 6 a.m. to conclusion of play. Ends tomorrow. 1233 Hulton Rd.

2) A fun event is always a little sweeter when it’s for a great cause. And that’s the case tonight at East Liberty’s Kelly-Strayhorn Theater where Pittsburgh’s Surgicorps will hold a benefit party to raise funds for their latest medical mission to Zambia. Native Zambian, and current Pittsburgh resident, Matthew Tembo will perform Afro fusion and reggae music with the Afro Routes band. Tembo is an award-winning musician who travels the world performing his special blend of music.

There’s two ways to experience this fun happening. One is as a VIP ($100) where you’ll receive wine, beer, and hors d’oeuvres. Steelers and Pens tickets, a wine basket and many other cool prizes including a trip are auction items. Another way to go and support the Surgicorps team is as a pay-what-you-want attendee. VIP 6-7:30 p.m., general admission 7:30 p.m., performance at 8 p.m. General admission tickets are also available at the door. Since 1994 Surgicorps International has provided free medical and surgical services free-of-charge in developing countries. 5941 Penn Ave. Editors note: the writer’s sister has been on several Surgicorps’ trips and reports that they are an overwhelmingly positive experience for both the patients and the medical teams.

3) Baja Bar and Grill will be jamming tonight as the band Nightlife performs some groovalicious dance and funk hits. Songs from Earth Wind & Fire, Kool & The Gang, and Rick James could be played! 9 p.m. 1366 Old Freeport Rd., O’Hara Township.
