Volbeat Takes Stage AE; VNV Nation Rocks Mr. Smalls (CPs Wed., 4/30/2014)

1) Danish rockers Volbeat stop in Pittsburgh for a high-octane set list at Stage AE. With a sound similar to that of Rise Against, Volbeat includes pop elements and maintains a radio-friendly side to their hardened roots. Songs like “Heaven nor Hell” or “Cape of Our Hero” demonstrate their ability to juxtapose deep, emotional lyrics to high tempos in unlikely musical complements. A slide guitar has the same result with a twangy twist in the intro to “We.” Opening acts are Trivium and Digital Summer, making this a great show to start off your concert season. Doors open at  7 p.m. 400 N. Shore Dr., North Shore.

2) Some things just seem better across the pond: fish and chips, a pint of Guiness, and techno music. English/Irish electronica duo VNV Nation bring their talent to Mr. Smalls in Millvale. Smooth beats and seamless lyrics combine in mellow songs, like “Illusion,” as well as in their upbeat counterparts, like “Chrome.” Grab some glow sticks and don’t forget your dancing shoes for this performance. With special guests Whiteqube. 8 p.m. 400 Lincoln Ave.

3) It’s time for Jergel’s Rhythm Grille’s monthly Martinis and Manicures night! Grab your girlfriends and enjoy a ladies’ night, complete with drink specials and walking manicures during happy hour. Afterwards, stick around for a performance by local blues favorites Billy the Kid & The Regulators. With a cocktail of happy hour, manicures, and great music, it’s easy to chase away the mid-week blues. Happy hour is 5:30 – 8 p.m. 285 Northgate Dr., Warrendale.

4) Love to sing but karaoke isn’t your thing? Or do you find yourself holding back the urge to sing along when you’re at a CLO performance? Let your hair down and bring that urge to the Backstage Bar for Hello Donny: A Showtune Sing Along. Featuring a local emcee and a pianist, you’ll relive your favorite Broadway memories through the magic of song. Case of stage fright? No problem! Stay at your table or bar stool and just enjoy the music: You don’t have to sing for the audience; you are the audience. 9:30 p.m. 655 Penn Ave., Cultural District.
