Water Liars Find Truth at Club Cafe; “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson” Rocks Pittsburgh Playhouse (CPs Sun., 3/2/2014)

1) Forget the walls of a single music genre; Water Liars break down the style barriers and run freely through them like a playground. As you’ll see in their gig at Club Café tonight, the Mississippi and Arkansas natives encompass a little of everything musically, switching it up for a constantly fresh and unexpected sound. While the blues (and some rock riffs) run free in “Backbone,” the early Radiohead-esque “Wyoming” changes gears for a somber and soulful feel. Inspired by great southern songwriters like Frank Stanford and Barry Hannah, Water Liars fill their songs with deep emotion and imagery to appeal to an ever-growing fan base. Contradiction in lyrics and rhythms pave the way for a unique musical experience that’s been pleasing audiences across the country. Special guests include Paul Luc and Look Left. 8 p.m. 56-58 S. 12th St., South Side.

2) Andrew Jackson is more than a pretty face on the $20 bill in the Pittsburgh Playhouse  Conservatory Theatre Company’s production of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson. This rock musical shows snippets of the seventh President’s life as a rock star. With his #1 groupie (First Lady) Rachel and sidekicks Henry Clay, Martin Van Buren, and John C. Calhoun, Jackson rocks and swaggers through a show that focuses on populism and the Indian Removal Act. Director Michael McKelvey and his talented cast deliver a different perspective on a chapter of American history. Ends today. 2 p.m. Rockwell Theatre, 222 Craft Ave., Oakland.

3) The Emerald City never had it so good! Between last year’s Oz: The Great and Powerful, a national tour of Wicked, and a special 3D format of The Wizard of Oz, we’ve got the emerald fever these days. Grab your ruby slippers and make your way over to the Carnegie Science Center (we suggest car or public transit, as a twister isn’t a reliable form of transportation) for Lasers of Oz in the Buhl Planetarium. This exciting light show combines music from the 1939 classic and stunning lasers for a technological twist on one of the most beloved films of all time. 2 p.m. 1 Allegheny Ave., North Shore.

4) Roll out the red carpet, Pittsburgh, it’s time for the Hollywood Awards Party at Dormont’s Hollywood Theater. Feel like an A-list celebrity as you walk the red carpet to the theater entrance. Once inside, you can enjoy games, prizes, and MCs from Top of the Line Entertainment. The party continues with coverage of Hollywood’s biggest night on the big screen. A general admission ticket gets you floor seating, a small popcorn, and a small drink; or go all out with a VIP ticket for balcony seating, bottomless popcorn, champagne, and other surprise benefits. Formal attire (tux or gown) is encouraged but not required. Whether you’re in a glamorous number by Christian Dior or your favorite yoga pants from Old Navy, you’ll feel like a star when you cheer on your favorites of the silver screen. 6 p.m. 1449 Potomac Ave., Dormont.
