Steel Panther struts in for a concert at Stage AE this month. With that name, you may think the band hails from Pitt, but it’s actually a heavy metal group from L.A. Steel Panther’s songs combine humor with R- to X-rated content—the “Community Property” video, above, actually is one of the less raunchy ones—while the band’s whole act, including big hair and over-the-top costumes, parodies the glam-metal bands of the 1980s. Another interesting month for music in Pittsburgh with many Americana music groups and big summer acts starting to come into view.
Judas Priest—one of the original heavy metal bands—formed in Birmingham, England in 1969 and is still going strong. Having been early adopters of leather and studs as performance wear, the group now performs with a mix of original and newer members. Their power guitar attack has produced top hits like “You’ve Got Another Thing Coming” and “Painkiller.” MTV ranked Judas Priest as the Second Greatest Metal Band of All Time, right behind Black Sabbath.
