African Cuisine Restaurant Specializes in West African Food (Mon., 4/26/21)

African Cuisine, which opened February 27, 2021, serves Western African dishes, specifically from Nigeria. The breakfast menu includes yam and egg, omelettes, and Akara, a fried bean cake. Yams also dot the lunch and dinner menu as do Nigerian shawarma, rice options, and a selection of 14 stews including Ayamase, a black stew with green peppers, onions, native spices, and a protein. Other interesting offerings are coconut rice, smoked catfish, and marinated chicken dishes. Appetizers range from fried crunchy snail, Scotch eggs, to meat and chicken pies. BYOB, or if you need a pick-me-up—coffee Africana or Naija Mi Crazy (coffee with shots of espresso). Delivery and catering are also available. For co-owner Dr. Saudat Lawal, the venture reads like another chapter in an illustrious life. After working as an accountant, she immigrated to the United States and became a registered nurse. She and her husband opened African Cuisine on the heels of her finishing her doctorate in nursing from Robert Morris University. Dr. Lawal is from Ibadan, Nigeria, where her family ran a restaurant too. 2032 Murray Ave., Squirrel Hill. (CM)
