Cool Picks Thursday June 14, 2012

1) Igniting the Promise is the unique fund raising event going on tonight at Stage AE. The bash will raise money for the Pittsburgh Promise program, where every city of  Pittsburgh student who wants to go to college and has completed the program requirements, gets money towards tuition. For every $1.50 raised, UPMC will donate $1. The event is hosted by Kiya and Mike Tomlin. Entertainers include G.-Love and Special Sauce, Ashanti, DJ Bonics (part of Whiz Khalifa’s Taylor Gang), DJ Zimmie and others. Event starts at 8:30 pm and goes all night long until sunrise tomorrow morning.

2) Space Pimps &  Cello Fury play an all ages show at Altar Bar in the strip starting at 7 pm.

3) Jeff Jimerson and the  rock band Airborne were especially big in Pittsburgh during the ’90s. They are still popular and playing at Jergel’s Rhythym Cafe in Warrendale tonight at 8pm. Jimerson was the national anthem singer during the Penguins game in the Pittsburgh-filmed movie, Sudden Death.

4) Sheena B. (not Sheila E.) will favor the crowd at Andy’s, in the beautiful new Fairmont Hotel – Downtown, with some cool jazz sets from 7:30 to 10:30 pm.

5) Pittsburgh Improv Jam features top local comics doing their thing in the Cultural Trust’s Late Night Cabaret series. Starting at 10 pm tonight you can follow the laughs to the Backstage bar on Penn Avenue (Downtown).
