1) American Idiot opens tonight, direct from New York City where it was a huge hit, as part of PNC’s Broadway Across America series at Heinz Hall. The play chronicles three life-long friends who must choose between chasing their dreams and the safety of suburbia. American Idiot is based on the multi-Grammy Award winning rock opera album of the same name by the punk rock band Green Day. 7:30 p.m. Runs through Sunday. 600 Penn Ave., Cultural District.

2) The Thunderbird Cafe’s Space Exchange series continues with Colter Harper. Harper graduated with a doctorate degree in ethnomusicology from the University of Pittsburgh and is a guitarist for Pittsburgh’s Rusted Root. 9 p.m. No Cover. 4023 Butler St., Lawrenceville.

3) Overkill’s in town representing the New York/New Jersey thrash metal scene. Also on the bill are Zilch, Metacide, The Last Grimoire and Atlas Forge. 7 p.m. Altar Bar. 1620 Penn Ave., Strip District.

4) It”s a Mexican Tuesday at South Side’s Lava Lounge. Margaritas only $4 (9 p.m. – close) and beef or veggie tacos are$.85 (5 p.m. – midnight). 2204 E. Carson St.
