Fitz and the Tantrums Rock at AE; Oak Ridge Boys Serenade The Meadows (CPs Sat., 7/5/14)

1) Soulful indie pop/rock six-piece Fitz and the Tantrums visit Stage AE for an outdoor set, led by titular Michael “Fitz” Fitzpatrick. Rolling Stone labeled Fitz and the Tantrums a band to watch in 2011 and the magazine was spot on in its assessment, if the band’s success is any indicator. Since that article was published, the band released its sophomore album, More Than Just a Dream, which has received generous airplay due to dangerously catchy tunes like its two singles, “Out of My League” and “The Walker,” both of which hold consistent spots on alternative top 100 charts. The Tantrums’ sound is full, well-rounded, and extremely polished, while the band itself feels right at home before a large audience, due largely to the high-energy, electrifying interplay between Fitzpatrick and his vocal counterpart, Noelle Scaggs. The band members’ hard work and talent has landed them on the same stage as major, diverse acts ranging from ska legends The Specials to contemporary pop superstars Maroon 5. Joined by holychild and Max Frost. 6:30 p.m. 400 N. Shore Dr., North Shore.

2) Renowned country/gospel quartet the Oak Ridge Boys stop by the Meadows Racetrack and Casino on their “Boys Night Out 2014” tour. An American fixture for well over 50 years, the Oak Ridge Boys got their start as the Oak Ridge Quartet in Knoxville, Tennessee in the 1940s, shortly after World War II. Since then, they’ve had a history nearly as rich as their signature vocals—a history filled with countless awards, lineup changes, innovation, and hit singles. Prevailing above all else is the vocal talent employed by the four Boys: Duane Allen, Joe Bonsall, William Lee Golden, and Richard Sterban. That same vocal talent has, over the years, helped the Oak Ridge Boys accrue invitations to record with country music greats like Johnny Cash, George Jones, Brenda Lee, and Billy Ray Cyrus. See them live at this outdoor show—rain or shine. 8 p.m. 210 Racetrack Rd., Washington.

3) Our own Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra invites you to a free outdoor concert at the South Park Amphitheater, another performance in the 2014 Allegheny County Summer Concert Series. Just in time to keep yesterday’s Independence Day patriotism alive, the program has a stimulating selection of American favorites. These include Bob Lowden’s “Armed Forces Salute,” and (though in fact Russian in origin) Tchaikovsky’s ever-popular “1812 Overture,” which is a common accompaniment to July 4th fireworks displays. Bring your friends, family, and a cooler full of leftovers from yesterday’s cookout, and let the Pittsburgh Symphony take you on an American journey. Led by resident conductor Fawzi Haimor. 8 p.m. Near Brownsville and McCorkle Roads, South Park.
