Giants vs. Pirates; ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E.’ in Local Theaters (Thurs., 8/20/15)

1) Tonight’s the first game of a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants for our Pittsburgh Pirates. The Giants currently occupy second place in the NL West, just a few games behind the first place Los Angeles Dodgers. 7:05 p.m. PNC Park, 115 Federal St., North Shore.

2) The Man from U.N.C.L.E.D’you ever wonder why movies are the way they are today? Just look at the writing credits on the film version of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. The screenplay is by Guy Ritchie and Lionel Wigram from a story by Jeff Kleeman and David C. Wilson from an earlier story by Ritchie and Wigram based on the television series by Sam Rolfe which was developed, in part, with help from Ian Fleming. Whew! Would it be churlish to point out that Tennessee Williams wrote what many people consider to be masterpieces all by himself? In any event, this is a film version of the 1960’s television series and it’s directed by Ritchie. Though he’s a man with an interesting cinematic vision, he’s also known for the excessive, unsupported violence of that vision. (I suppose, however, that having been married to Madonna probably does leave you with a lot of repressed anger.) Check Fandango for screens and times. (TH)

3) Perhaps you’ve seen the line for seating stretched out the door. Nak Won Garden, located next to Giant Eagle’s Market District, is the hottest Korean restaurant in the city right now. It’s also a family affair. Chung-Chu Yi and his sister and her daughter all help to run the establishment. They promise more traditional dishes, but, no worries, they have plenty of kimchi and that Korean BBQ Americans love. Pittsburghers, meanwhile, love Nak Won Garden. As for vegetarians, the menu asks to simply “Lettuce know before ordering.” Gotta love a restaurant with a sense of humor. 5504 Centre Ave., Shadyside. (CM)
