Rhett Miler Plays Club Cafe; “Nightcrawler” Now Screening (CPs Mon., 11/3/14)

1) Rhett Miller, solo artist and front man for alt-country band the Old 97’s, makes his way to Club Cafe tonight for a show. Miller has released nine studio albums with the 97’s and six as a soloist, with his most recent being 2012’s The Dreamer. He is an accomplished singer and guitar player, as can be seen in the song “Lost Without You.” Special guest is Paul Luc. 8 p.m. 56 – 58 S. 12th St., South Side.

2) Academy Award buzz is already buzzing for Jake Gyllenhaal as a journalist obsessed with reporting the latest crime in Nightcrawler. The movie, which opened Friday, is written and directed by Dan (The Fall) Gilroy. It’s got gritty Los Angeles settings, a supporting cast featuring Bill Paxton and Rene Russo, and Gyllenhaal on a starvation diet for the role. (Oscar eats that stuff up!) At the news department of many TV station—in quest for larger audiences—the unofficial mantra is “If it bleeds it leads.” We’ll see if this holds true at the box office as well. Check Fandango for local screens and times.

3) It’s Global Mondays at Cappy’s Cafe in Shadyside with imported bottled beers for only $3. While there, team up an import with a bowl of their scrumptious chili. 5431 Walnut St.
