Pig Pen Theatre’s ‘The Old Man and the Old Moon’ at City; Murder for Girls CD Release Concert (Sat., 11/11/17)

1) Calling The Old Man and The Old Moon a “musical,” or more accurately a “play with music,” is an understatement. Theater critics in New York and elsewhere have been left searching for words to describe it—and for superlatives to praise it. It’s an invented mythical story, acted out with the use of shadow puppets, weird DIY stage props, and original Irish-inflected folk-style music played and sung by the actors. It is the work of PigPen Theatre Co., a group of seven Carnegie Mellon alumni currently based in New York. They’ve won a boatload of non-mainstream theater awards and taken shows on the road across the country, while also playing music gigs and self-releasing albums with songs like this one. City Theatre has invited the PigPen crew back to town to give The Old Man and The Old Moon its Pittsburgh premiere. Chicago-based director Stuart Carden, who co-directed the play in San Diego, takes on the same role here. 5:30 p.m. Performances through December 3. 1300 Bingham St., South Side. PigPen’s visit also includes concerts at nearby Club Cafe on Nov, 20 and Dec. 4. (MV)

2) Murder for Girls has completed production on their latest LP, All the Pretty Stars and will be launching it with a CD release show tonight at Lawrenceville’s new Aftershock Theatre. The show will begin at 10 p.m. after the final performance of true crime concert production Angelmakers: Songs for Female Serial Killers (featuring drummer Michele Dunlap and former member Zorahna). The release event is free for patrons of the 8 p.m. theatrical performance.  A free CD will be included in the $5 cover for the Murder for girls’ show. To purchase tickets for Angelmakers, visit their website.  Murder for Girls is a punky, crunchy band built upon the strong bass lines of bass guitarist Jonathan Bagamery, intense rhythmic drumming of Michele Dunlap, and dual guitar sound of Tammy Wallace and Stephanie Wallace and their harmonic, fast-paced vocals. Murder for Girls is active on the local scene and has drawn good crowds to their appearances at the Deutschtown Music Festival, RANT, and Ladyfest. Aftershock Theatre, 115 57th Street, Lawrenceville.
