Benedum Hosts Steve Martin and Martin Short; Outlaws Play Palace; Downtown Pittsburgh Highmark Light Up Night (Sat., 11/22/25)

1) Two Martins, three nights. If you enjoyed Martin Short and Steve Martin’s witty banter in films such as 1986’s Three Amigos and 1991’s Father of the Bride, then check out their joint performance at the Benedum Center. Both comedians appear in the hit series “Only Murderers in the Building.” Short was a “Saturday Night Live” cast member for only one season (’84-’85), but he is credited, along with other members of that cast, with helping to revive the series. In addition to film, he has also performed on Broadway, including a one-man show, Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me. Steve Martin is an accomplished writer and actor, and he has hosted “Saturday Night Live” 16 times, second only to Alec Baldwin, who has hosted 17 times. Martin plays banjo and has frequently collaborated with Grammy-winning bluegrass band Steep Canyon Rangers. Martin and Short are on their The Dukes of Funnytown Tour!  8 p.m. tonight and tomorrow. 237th 7th St., Cultural District. (C.M., R.H.)

2) Southern rock finds its way north with the Outlaws. For over 40 years, the band has been thriving in the Southern rock genre along with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Charlie Daniels, and The Allman Brothers. Founded in Tampa, Florida, in ’72, the Outlaws put forth a Southern rock opus with “Green Grass and High Tides” and scored a major hit with “There Goes Another Love Song.” Outlaw trademarks include beautiful vocal harmonies and intricate lead guitar play. Surviving the test of time, the inevitable evolution of popular music, and bandmates’ deaths, the Outlaws are definitely alive, kicking, and, it would seem, stronger than ever. The Outlaws are one of the original groups to proudly carry forward the Southern rock banner. The band’s latest album is 2020’s Dixie Highway. They come our way with special guest The Artimus Pyle Band. 7:30 p.m. Palace Theatre, 21 W. Otterman St., Greensburg. (R.H.)

3) Tonight’s Annual Highmark Light Up Night is the official kick off to Pittsburgh’s holiday season—even if some national retailers started the holiday season the day after Halloween. Highlights include several tree-lighting ceremonies, a bridge lighting, ice skating at PPG Plaza, Xfinity Zambelli Fireworks Finale (9:30 p.m.), and an appearance by Santa. The main headliner is the national rock group, The Calling (Xfinity Riverside Stage, 8:30 p.m.). There’s also top-notch local entertainment on several stages. Local groups performing include Joe Grushecky and The Houserockers (Highmark Main Stage, 6  p.m.), Kahone Concept (Highmark Main Stage, 8:15 p.m.), and Justin Fabus (Xfinity Riverside Stage, 6:30 p.m.) There are plenty more activities. For a full schedule of events see the Highmark Light Up Night Web page. Merriment and goodwill will erupt all over the Golden Triangle. The People Gas Holiday Market will be open in the Cultural District this year. This is a holiday celebration not to miss. 3 to 11 p.m., Downtown.

4) WDVE-FM morning show host Randy Baumann is also a talented musician. He and his Ramble bandmates will be joined by a roster of 412 All-Stars to perform songs from The Band’s Last Waltz concert performance. The Band created some fantastic music and it will be wonderful to hear it played live by talented local musicians. The Smalls Waltz. Mr. Smalls. 8 p.m. 400 Lincoln Ave., Millvale.

5) SongSpace at First Unitarian Church is hosting a musical program, The Three Rivers Song Collective, to play original and cover songs about our fair city of Pittsburgh. “The idea for the Three Rivers Song Collective probably happened because of Pittsburghers listening to me singing songs about Cincinnati, Kansas, Montreal, or France and asking ‘When are you going to write some songs about Pittsburgh?’'” says organizer and singer/songwriter Christopher Mark Jones. “The Collective grew beyond those humble beginnings to include six accomplished songwriters who defined our goal as ‘the writing and performance of new songs oriented toward below-the-surface portrayals of current or former aspects of life in the Pittsburgh region’, though we eventually dusted off a few from our collective repertory and included a few covers.”

The Three Rivers Song Collective are Tai Chirovsky, Liz McBride, Brad Yoder, Guy Russo, Ben Shannon, and Christopher Mark Jones. 7:30 p.m. 605 Morewood Ave., Shadyside.
