Parker’s Pgh Serves Tasty Fare in Dormont; Tropical Tuesdays at brillobox (Tues., 6/14/16)

1) Dormont Dogs may have gone to heaven, but mourners can still order a Dormont dog at Parker’s Pgh, the sandwich-shop now in its place. The menu offers “the original ‘dormont dogs,’” including hot dogs named after Dormont streets, just like the old hotdog shop used to have. Parker’s of course boasts plenty of its own originals. It’s these options that have made it the packed establishment it is today. Located just off Potomac Avenue, Dormont’s main drag, Parker’s specializes in sandwiches, both for breakfast and lunch, plus salads, and sides. Customers can build their own, pick a menu item, or leave their culinary fate in the hands of the artisans with The Lottery Ticket—the staff picks the bun, meats, cheese, and condiments. Their bacon mac and cheese is a hit, and they proudly brew Zeke’s coffee. They also have a limited daily amount of pretzels from the South Side’s Pretzel Shop. Local delivery is available during lunch hours as well. 2911 Glenmore Ave., Dormont. (CM)

2) Getaway to the tropics with a trip to brillobox for Tropical Tuesdays. There you’ll feel the trade winds (breeze from the fans) soothing your overdue vacation bones. Here’s a sampling of their specials: $3 select craft cans, $4 frozen drinks, $10 California bubble bath, $10 Eva Peron, $7 Fernet con cola, and $6 Coronita Margaveza. You can also sop up the island drinks with $7 pineapple soy-glazed chicken or tofu skewers served with Caribbean sweet potato salad. Shoes and shirt required. 5 p.m. – 2 a.m. 4104 Penn Ave., Bloomfield.

3) Love & Friendship – What’s that? You adore Jane Austen but if you see one more protracted courtship between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy you’re going to scream? You refuse to be held accountable for your actions if you’ve got to witness John Dashwood cheat his mother and half sisters out of their inheritance? Can’t stand the thought of Emma messing up the lives of everyone around her one more time? Yes, Austen was an astonishingly brilliant writer, but only six of her novels were published in her lifetime … and all of them have been filmed and filmed again. What’s a dedicated Janeite to do? (As her more rabid fans style themselves.) There’s hope on the horizon with this film written and directed by Whit Stillman. It’s a comedy based on one of Austen’s earliest works, a short epistolary novel called Lady Susan, and it’s about a woman of society with the morals of a snake. The film reunites Kate Beckinsale and Chloë Sevigny who last appeared together in Stillman’s 1998 drama The Last Days of Disco. Stephen Fry, Jemma Redgrave, James Fleet, and Tom Bennett also star. Janeites rejoice! Check Fandango for screens and times. (TH)
