PMT’s ‘A Lyrical Christmas Carol’ on New Hazlett Stage; Nightlife Band Performs at Club Baja (Sat., 12/19/15)

1) The centuries have seen countless stage versions of the Christmas tale by Charles Dickens, and though we cannot say where Ken Gargaro’s A Lyrical Christmas Carol ranks among them, the musical is a longtime favorite here in Pittsburgh. Gargaro was founding director of the Pittsburgh Musical Theater school and performance center. He wrote A Lyrical Christmas Carol with wife Jane, premiered it in 1991, and it has been delighting local audiences ever since. As always, the cast includes accomplished adult performers along with outstanding younger folks from the PMT school. Also as always, the show features some song-and-dance numbers that’ll send you home from the New Hazlett Theater in a supercharged holiday spirit. 7:30 p.m. Ends tomorrow. 6 Allegheny Square East, North Side. (Fun fact: Jane Gargaro was this editor’s English teacher at Peabody High School. She was an excellent and popular instructor!) (MV)

2) Club Baja will be jamming tonight as the band Nightlife performs some groovalicious dance and funk hits. Songs from Earth Wind & Fire, Kool & The Gang, and Rick James could be played! 9 p.m. 1366 Old Freeport Rd., O’Hara Township.

3) The Pens face off against the Carolina Hurricanes  in a 7 p.m. game tonight at the Consol Energy Center. New head coach Mike Sullivan’s debut was unspectacular as the Pens lost to the Capitals 4-1. The Pens next game is Monday night—at home— versus the Columbus Blue Jackets. 1001 Fifth Ave., Uptown.
