Savoy Jazz Christmas Special; “Annie” and “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” Screening (CPs Mon., 12/22/14)

1) Savoy Restaurant’s Savoy Jazz Mondays continues with their Christmas Special tonight featuring the Roger Humphries Trio with Charlie G., Fred Pugh III, Etta Cox, Shawnee Lake, and Judy FigelHeat up with some great jazz. 6 – 10 p.m. No cover. 2623 Penn Ave., Strip District.

2) Annie—An update of the Broadway musical, which was itself an adaptation of the Depression-era comic strip, the movie has opened in theaters. This time Annie (Quvenzhané Wallis) is living with evil foster parent Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz). Daddy Warbucks is now called Will Stacks, and he’s a tycoon/mayoral candidate played by Jamie Foxx. Sight unseen, it’s got to be better than the legendarily dreadful 1982 version directed by John Huston. Check Fandango for screens and times.

3) The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is a movie from the concluding chapter of the Tolkien novel. Bilbo and the gang are battling Smaug the Dragon and a whole slew of armies. Director Peter Jackson has announced that the film ends with a 45-minute battle scene … so much for Peace on (Middle) Earth, Goodwill T’ward Men. Check Fandango for the nearest movie house where it’s screening.
