The Clarks Play Jergel’s; DJ Alex Homer at Hemingway’s Cafe (Sat., 12/29/18)

1) The Clarks, one of Pittsburgh’s top rock bands, gained a strong local following in the early ’90s gigging at clubs like the notable Graffiti, and have remained together and active long after nearly every other band on the scene during that era called it quits. After 30 years, 17 albums, countless gigs and zero line-up changes, The Clarks have gone from being a regional favorite to a local institution. And the band members, who formed at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, have never forgotten their home turf. The Clarks released their latest album Madly In Love at the End of the World on June 8. It is a  more rootsy, alt-country type of sound for the group. They have added pedal steel guitar and Hammond organ to their guitar rock signature sound. The album was produced by Dave Hidek at The Church Recording Studio in Overbrook. Tonight The Clarks play a sold out show at Jergel’s. 8:30 p.m. 285 Northgate Dr., Warrendale.

2) Hemingway’s Cafe is known as a great hangout spot by nearly every single college kid in the ’Burgh. Why? Two words: “shot pitchers.” OK, there are plenty of other reasons, but these pitchers, often topped with gummy worms, balance a fun appearance with all the classy taste of a great cocktail. Beer-o-philes, meanwhile, can imbibe from 40 drafts. A different featured draft is $2.75 every day (except Sunday when the restaurant is closed). And you have three chances to catch the $5 food menu (11 a.m.-noon, 2-4 p.m., and 9 p.m.-midnight). That menu, by the way, is long with typical pub staples (burgers and wraps) and some surprises. (A section devoted to grilled cheese? Yes, please.). Buzzworthy Pub Trivia begins at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. The latter is music-specific. DJs Pat Flaherty and Alex Homer, both of DJ Company, spin 11 p.m.-2 a.m. Friday and Saturday, respectively. 3911 Forbes Ave, Oakland. (EC)
