TLC, Salt-N-Pepa, and En Vogue in Hip Hop Show at Star Lake (Mon., 8/24/26)

If you are into girl groups—not the kind with women on guitars and drums, etc., but female vocal groups, in the tradition of The Supremes, except newer—then a chance is at hand to hear three distinguished acts on the same bill. TLC are a seminal R&B group. Their 1996 album Crazysexycool is a classic, having spawned the hits “Creep” and “Waterfalls.” TLC was tragically derailed for a long while after member Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes died in a car crash while performing charity work in Honduras in 2002. The remaining duo eventually re-formed in 2015 and released a self-titled album in 2017; they’re still going strong today. Their co-headliners, Salt-N-Pepa, played a lead role in bringing hip hop into the realm of women’s vocal pop. In 2021 they received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and next time you’re in LA you may notice that Salt-n-Pepa has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But the women themselves can be seen here, along with the third group on the bill, En Vogue. These singers have their own distinctive mix, with some hip hop but generally a more classical sound. Songs like “Rocket” are from En Vogue’s latest album, 2018’s Electric Cafe.
