Nana’s Scoops Will Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth

Ruby’s Cleaners on Northumberland Street in Squirrel Hill had decided to close its connected tailoring shop several years ago. And, so the space sat unused. That’s until Eshraaq Al Saeed, who owns Ruby’s with her husband Amar, helped daughter Ronya open Nana’s Scoops. The cozy storefront now offers 12 flavors of Perry’s Ice cream, soft serve, and slushies. Additionally Eshraaq and Ronya bake traditional middle eastern pastries like baklava and burma.. And that’s not all; there’s fresh baked cakes, hand dipped chocolates, coffee and Iraqi tea. The popular Dubai chocolates are also on the confection list. Nana is a childhood nickname for Ronya so it was a natural fit for the store.
Ronya said, “My dad owns Ruby Cleaners so we are well known in the community. We know a lot of people from the neighborhood. Everyone has been very amazing, very nice. So we feel like it’s a perfect place to open an ice cream shop. The shop has been open for a little over a year and it’s been going fantastic. We have the fire and police department right next door. They love to come over and get some ice cream off of their shifts.
“We love to see the kids coming in and playing in the front (there’s benches and picnic tables outside on a small grassy area) and you really form a lot of amazing connections. Some of the customers come in; you have a conversation with them and it’s just so nice getting to know everyone.”

Ronya is very busy as a sophomore in pre-med at the University of Pittsburgh, but enjoys working in the business as much as she can. Eshraaq helps cover many shifts. The Al Khafaji family immigrated from Iraq and opened Ruby’s Cleaners in 2010.
In closing, Ronya said, “It’s a small family business so we really appreciate all the support we can get. We really make all the treats with love and try to use the best ingredients possible, the best quality that we can.”
Whatever sweet craving you may have, Nana’s Scoops has almost everything you need to satisfy it.
