Crepes Parisiennes Consolidates Locations and Grows on South Craig Street

Crepes Parisiennes South Craig Street Location

After thirteen years of serving crepes, coffees and French teas at its Shadyside locale, Crepes Parisiennes, at 732 Filbert Street, has closed but is not gone. The charming little French cafe with the best sweet and savory crepes around has simply consolidated operations with its South Craig Street restaurant in Oakland. Owner David Handler says “Shadyside was great to us…it was our first restaurant. Our lease was up and we decided to consolidate everything into our Oakland location, where we own the building.”

While many customers will surely be disappointed to see their hideaway empty, there are several esoteric as well as gastronomic consolations. The modern Oakland creperie is a perfect setting amid all of the college commotion (hubbub), serving the same, delicious crepes that were served in Shadyside (NOTE: extra crepe burners have been installed to smoothly meet any increased demand). This menu also offers authentic Belgium waffles and various grilled panini sandwiches.Everything is super fresh and reasonably priced.

Handler was a fashion photographer in Paris for five years in the early to mid 1990’s. He says he ate a crepe almost every day for lunch from one of the many colorful street vendors. When he returned to Pittsburgh in (the late) 1990’s  he built a crepe cart and drove it, weekdays, to Carnegie Mellon University where he sold hot, made-to-order crepes year round. The first mobile crepe maker in town, Crepes Parisiennes was born out of that success in September, 2000. Crepes Parisiennes is owned and operated by Handler and his wife.

A sampling of available crepe selections include Nutella and fruit, Black Forest ham, macaroon, hardwood smoked ham and cheese, and smoked salmon. Customers can choose from several assorted toppings and sauces, depending upon whether the crepe is sweet or savory, including bechamel, Soy tang, garlic olive oil, creme fraiche, chopped walnuts, and whipped cream. Grilled panini offerings include tomato, fresh mozzarella & pesto; turkey, avocado, tomato, & cheese. All paninis and savory crepes are accompanied by a mix of greens and Crepes Parisiennes’ homemade champagne vinaigrette dressing.
