Baby Brains and Nox Boys at Get Hip; Monster Pumpkins Festival; Riverhounds vs. Bethlehem Steel FC (Sat., 10/20/18)

1) Baby Brains is the performing name for York, Pennyslvania’s, Amanda Steever. She delivers a jangly electric guitar garage/pop sounds with good vocals and support from a backing band. Baby Brains will be in concert at Get Hip Recordings. The company is a record label and distributor of over 20,000 titles in independent music started by members of the rock band The Cynics. It is now led by Cynics guitarist Gregg Kostelich and his wife, Barbara Garcia-Bernardo. 2) Add in one part “Late Night with David Letterman” show fruit drop, one part Three Rivers Regatta Anything That Floats race, and another part public art and sculpture, and you have The Pittsburgh Monster Pumpkin Festival. Occurring today and tomorrow at the Great Lawn at the North Shore Riverfront Park, the festival features, huge pumpkins, pumpkin carving, pumpkin drops, and pumpkins that are hollowed out like a canoe and will race in heats on the river. And you can’t have  a pumpkin fest without some delicious pumpkin pie, which there will be plenty of on hand. Hopefully they will be playing some music from the band Smashing Pumpkins. There will be other fun activities as well. 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. today and noon to 6 p.m. tomorrow.

3) One of Pittsburgh’s hottest sports teams takes the field tonight—The Riverhounds. The squad has made the playoffs and tonight take on the Bethlehem Steel FC at 7 p.m. at Highmark stadium. See some good soccer action up close and in person. 510 W. Station Square Dr., Station Square.

4) God of Carnage sounds like a followup to Assassin’s Creed but it is a comedy. No killings occur, although there’s brawling and property damage aplenty in this award-winning play by French writer Yasmina Reza. Two couples meet to discuss a playground fight that their sons had gotten into. Both sets of parents are sophisticated, educated, and quite indoctrinated in the social norms that call for such differences to be settled in a civilized manner, but that’s not how it goes. Pittsburgh’s Stage Right is performing God of Carnage in a limited run, so get your ringside seats promptly. The play has become a global hit since its 2006 premiere in Zurich. Translated to English, it won the Tony Award for Best Play and the Larry—England’s Laurence Olivier Award—for Best Comedy, both in 2009. God of Carnage has been done in places from Chile to Dubai, and Stage Right is doing it in The Oaks Theater. Through Oct. 21. 7:30 p.m. at 310 Allegheny River Blvd., Oakmont. (MV)
