Stage AE Hosts Belle and Sebastian (CP’s Sat. 7/13/13)

1) Best known for songs like “If You’re Feeling Sinister” and “I’m a Cuckoo,” Scottish indie rockers Belle and Sebastian are making their way into Pittsburgh tonight at Stage AE. After eight studio albums, founding band member Stuart Murdoch and his band mates have been compared to the English rock band The Smiths. Special guest is Yo La Tengo. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. 400 North Shore Dr., North Shore.

2) It’s a great night to root, root, root for the home team, our Pirates, in the second game of their series against the struggling New York Mets. Tonight’s game is a Scratch ‘n Win Saturday where all fans receive a scratch off ticket and everyone’s a winner! Stick around after the game for spectacular Zambelli Fireworks. 7:15 p.m. PNC Park, 115 Federal St., North Shore.

3) If you’re looking for a unique musical experience, look no further than the Wood Street Galleries tonight. Drummer/percussionist Ravish Momin (a CMU grad) performs Tarana music (a form of Hindustani vocal music where certain words and syllables are melodically repeated at a certain pace) with Rick Parker on the trombone and Pittsburgh dancer Gia Cacalano.  Add Ryoji Ikeda’s exhibit, data.tron, to the mix, and you have a treat for your eyes and ears at this one-of-a-kind show! data.tron  is on exhibit through Sept.8. 8:00 p.m. 601 Wood St., Cultural District.

4) Travel back to a rural “slice of life” in the 1930’s when you visit Arthurdale, West Virginia’s New Deal Festival. Arthurdale, is a historical planned rural community developed in 1933, during under the Great Depression under the auspices of then First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. It’s known as Eleanor’s Little Village. The idea was to give farmers, laborers, coal miners, and others a self-sustaining rural community. Residents would contribute to the community through work in their farm plots, building additional housing, and working in the forge and garage. Arthurdale was the nation’s first New Deal Subsistence Homestead Community by President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration.  There’s an incredible array of New Deal Festival activities including artisan demonstrations, hayride tours of the community, antique car and tractor show, speak with children of the original homesteaders, horse-drawn wagon rides, crafts market, children’s activities, and enjoy tasty food. An added treat is live music from some of the areas outstanding musicians. Blues, country and folk bands are scheduled to play. On the bill are Mahajibee Blues, Triadelphia, Black Horse, and Soup Camel. Make sure to say hello to Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt (historical reenactors). Arthudale is approximately 15 minutes southeast of Morgantown, WV. 9 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

5) Are you ready to get your groove on? The funk will be flowing at Brillobox tonight for its monthly Title Town Soul and Funk Party. Guest DJ J Malls will be spinning 7-inch classics from R&B gems of the 50’s and 60’s to the funky sounds of the 70’s and 80’s. Come early, stay late, and don’t forget your boogie shoes! 9:00 p.m. 4014 Penn Ave., Bloomfield.

6) Australian pop singer Cody Simpson is performing an intimate show at Carnegie Library Music Hall. The 16-year-old’s voice has matured since his 2009 debut single, “iYiYi.” Songs like “Back to You” and “Summertime of our Lives” highlight the singer’s tenor range and his transition into songwriting. Special guests include Ryan Beatty and Before You Exit, so you’ll definitely want to get there early. 7:00 p.m. 510 E. 10th Ave., Munhall. SOLD OUT.

7) Even though you can’t see Cody Simpson in concert you can see him at the Second Annual Great American Water Balloon Fight at Highmark Stadium. Simpson will be making an appearance from noon – 1 p.m. There billing it as  “100,000 Water Balloons. 1,500 People. 4 Bands. 1 Winner.” Have fun and fight global poverty! Watch out for 105.9 The X FM DJ Tim Benz, he’s supposedly a terror with a water balloon. Doors open at 10 a.m. and fight starts at 1 p.m. South Side.
