Gov’t Mule Rocks Out at Stage AE (CP’s Wed. 9/18/13)

1) Get ready to rock at Stage AE with Southern jam band Gov’t Mule. The side project of then Allman Brothers Band members Warren Haynes (guitarist) and the late Allen Woody (bassist), Govt’ Mule now mixes psychedelic, blues, and hard rock to create an organic, improvised sound. You’ll never see the same show twice! The audience is sure to get a taste of The Mule’s new album, Shout!, set for release Sept. 24. The new 2-disc collection includes collaborations with Ben Harper, Grace Potter, Dave Matthews, and Steve Winwood, among many others. With names like that, you never know who might make a guest appearance on stage. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. 400 North Shore Dr., North Shore.

2) The heartland rock band BoDeans takes the stage at Jergel’s Rhythm Grille for all the 80’s and 90’s rock fans out there. Formed in 1983, BoDeans was voted the Best New American Band by a Rolling Stone readers’ poll in January 1987. BoDeans fame went mainstream with the 1993 release of “Closer to Free,” better known as the theme song to the TV series “Party of Five.” A self-proclaimed “truly American band,” founder Kurt Neumann describes BoDeans as “blues, rock, country, and soul all slammed together into one sound.” Hear old favorites as well as some new tunes from their latest release, American Made. 8 p.m. 103 Slade Ln., Warrendale.

3) Following in the footsteps of Pop Art icon Andy Warhol, another Pittsburgh native, Burton Morris, celebrates his first major exhibition in his hometown. Poptastic! The Art of Burton Morris at the Heinz History Center features nearly 50 works by the Carnegie Mellon University graduate, including paintings, sculptures, and interactive works. Although his name is less familiar than Warhol’s, Morris’s iconic imagery is becoming better known through its use in such products as Absolut Vodka, Chanel, and Kellogg’s cereals. Bold colors and thick lines radiate a simplistic happiness reminiscent of the best colors from a Crayola 64 pack. Runs through Feb. 23. 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. 1212 Smallman St., Strip District.

4) With an equipment truck full of such instruments as bagpipes, octave mandolin, and a glockenspiel, Canadian folk-rock band Enter the Haggis are bringing their music-making machines to Rex Theater. Commonly known as ETH, the band uses a variety of instruments to create a new twist to traditional folk sound. In addition, the combination of Brian Buchanan’s guitar and Bruce McCarthy’s drums adds a taste of rock to the mix while complementing the fiddle, saxophone, and accordion sounds. 8 p.m. 1602 E. Carson St., South Side.

5) The Pirates face off against the San Diego Padres at PNC Park. Get to a game before it’s too late; there are only five more home games in the regular season! 7:05 p.m. 115 Federal St., North Shore.
