Rod Stewart and Santana Share Consol Stage; Jergel’s Kicks off Summer With Hard-rocking Bike Night (CPs Tues., 5/27/14)

1) What happens when you put two music-industry legends with three Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions between them on the same stage? You get an unforgettable night, that’s what. Rod Stewart and Santana are at Consol Energy Center for the third stop on their 18-city summer tour, and the pair promises to deliver a night of classic songs made new  with a unique collaboration fueled by more than 90 combined years in the biz’. Fans of Stewart’s successful, long-running Vegas act got a chance to see what the seemingly unlikely duo can do earlier this year, and it was only a preview. You can bet the duo will dig deep into their respective libraries to deliver a show for the ages. 7:30 p.m. 1001 Fifth Ave., Uptown.

2) Rev up your Harley and head out to Jergel’s Rhythm Grille for bike night. Jergel’s is starting off the summer right with local band Undercover blowing the roof off the joint with covers of all of your favorite Top 40 hits. Make sure you head to the Cigar Bar to see guest bartender, classic rocker Donnie Iris of Jaggerz, Wild Cherry, and Donnie Iris and the Cruisers fame (remember this one?). Then round out the night with a bike competition and a pig roast. The fun kicks off at 8 p.m. No cover. 285 Northgate Dr., Warrendale.

3) Southwest Pa.-native jazz musician Eric DeFade is playing a show at the Backstage Bar at Theater Square this evening. DeFade has hit quite a few high notes, both with his sax and his career, winning two Grammy Awards for his work with Nancy Wilson and touring internationally with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and the Artie Shaw Big Band. But he hasn’t allowed success to take him away from home for too long or keep him from directly sharing his passion for music with those in this region. DeFade is a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University, where he finds his work with students as gratifying as any award or accolade. Hear his music and his story at this free event starting at 5 p.m. 655 Penn Ave, Cultural District.

4) Hemmingway’s Cafe is known as a great hangout spot by nearly every single college kid in the ‘Burgh, but did you know that every Tuesday evening from May through July, it is the place to hear nationally known and local poets share their latest works? Founded way back in 1975 by native Pittsburgh poet Jimmy Cvetic, who still curates the series, the Hemingway’s Poetry Series features prominent poets followed by an open-mic session for aspiring talent. Don’t worry, though, participation isn’t mandatory, so you can leave your rhyming dictionary at home. Tonight’s reading features Michele Battiste, Joy Katz, Leslie McIlroy, and Lauren Shapiro.
