“Orlando” Staged by Unseam’d; Amos Lee Performs at Three Rivers Arts Fest (CPs Wed., 6/11/14)

1) Wait. Did Shakespeare write Orlando? No, but that doesn’t stop the folks at Unseam’d Shakespeare Company, who like to burst the seams of convention with some of the most unexpected theater you’re likely to see. The action in Orlando begins in Elizabethan times and ends in the early 1900s. The title character is a young man who, mysteriously, lives for 400 years. Even more mysterious is his turning into a woman. This surreal comedy—a satire of gender stereotypes, British history, and more—is adapted from Virginia Woolf’s 1928 novel Orlando: A Biography. The movie Orlando, starring Tilda Swinton, was made in 1992, and the stage version you’ll see here is by the playwright Sarah Ruhl, winner of a MacArthur “genius grant” Fellowship. With a pedigree like that, how can you go wrong? Directed for Unseam’d by Richard C. T. Steele, with Amy Landis as Orlando. 8 p.m. Through June 21. Henry Heymann Theatre in the Stephen Foster Memorial, 4301 Forbes Ave., Oakland.

2) Amos Lee takes the stage at the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival tonight. Lee is a singer/songwriter/guitarist whose music draws from the folk, rock, and soul genres. He grew up in the Philadelphia area and worked as a school teacher and bartender while honing his musical skills. Lee’s  manager turned in a demo of his music to Blue Note Records, which resulted in a recording contract. He’s recorded five albums for Blue Note and has opened for Dave Matthews Band, Norah Jones, Bob Dylan, and other big acts. Lee is touring in support of his 2013 release Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song. 7:30 p.m. Point State Park, Downtown.

3) The field at PNC Park comes alive again tonight as the Chicago Cubs try to snatch a victory from our home town heroes—The Pirates. First pitch at 7:05 p.m. 115 Federal St., North Shore.

4) Don’t be a “hayseed.”  Get on over to Peter’s Pub for country music night with DJ JB. Check out their great specials: $5.50 fish bowls, $7.50 Smirnoff fish bowls, and $2 Yuengling bottles (10 p.m. – midnight); $5.50 Bud Lt. pitchers (7 p.m. to close);  and if you want to add some protein to the picture, $5 sandwiches ( 5 – 10 p.m.). 116 Oakland Ave., Oakland.
