That1Guy Plays His Unique Instrument at Club Café; Last Day For HHC’s “Treasures of Steamboat Arabia” (CPs Sun., 1/11/15)

1) That1Guy is just that—one guy. His real name is Mike Silverman, and his instrument, The Magic Pipe, redefines the concept of the one-man band. Sprinkle in some esoteric lyrics and a churning baritone, and you’ve got one guy who could give Beck a run for his money, both in originality and sheer weirdness. He tours relentlessly and is a fixture on the international festival circuit (Electric Forest, Big Day Out, Montreal Jazz Festival, just to name a few). He plays Club Café tonight. Additionally, he has won the Tap Water Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for best musical act. His collaborations with Buckethead as The Frankenstein Brothers have certified That1Guy as one of the most freakish men in music today. Freakishly awesome, that is. DJ Feels Goodman opens. 8 p.m. 56-58 S. 12th St., South Side.

2) In 1853, the steamboat Arabia was built and launched in Pittsburgh. Three years later, it struck a tree in the murky waters of the Missouri River and sank, filled with countless items destined for the frontier. In 1987, after years of searching, Missourian Bob Hawley and his sons unearthed the remains of the Arabia and found thousands of artifacts perfectly preserved in the mud. The exhibition Pittsburgh’s Lost Steamboat: Treasures of the Arabia at the Senator John Heinz History Center features nearly 2,000 of these objects, eyewitness accounts from passengers aboard the doomed vessel, and a memorial to the wreck’s only casualty—a mule tied to sawmill equipment on a lower deck. This exhibit ends today. 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. 1212 Smallman St., Strip District.

Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb An earlier Stanley Kubrick film about the insanity of the Cold War era and it’s lunatic policy of assured mutual self-destruction.  A rogue officer (Sterling Hayden) takes over an army base and the next thing you know James Earl Jones is flying an atomic bomb over to Russia. Peter Sellers plays three characters; a British army captain, the American president and the title character whom he based on Henry Kissinger. 7 p.m. Hollywood Theater, 1449 Potomac Ave., Dormont.

The Search for General Tsois a new documentary by Ian Cheney using this ubiquitous Chinese-American restaurant staple as a jumping off point exploring the history of Chinese immigrants in America and how what started as a small community in San Francisco ended up crossing the North American continent. 4 p.m. Hollywood Theater, 1449 Potomac Ave., Dormont.
