“My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish and I’m in Therapy” at Byham; Rangers vs. Pens (CPs Sun., 1/18/15)

1) It’s long been said that true love conquers all and that is certainly true for multi-religion/multi-ethnic marriages. Author/comedian Steve Solomon is a child of just such a relationship and he turned the angst of it into one of Broadway’s top one-man showsMy Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish and I’m in Therapy. He cut his comedy teeth first as the proverbial class clown, then as a physics teacher and assistant superintendent of schools in New York City, He used his comedic talents to subtly drive home lessons in his educational work. Solomon has toured with this fun-filled show internationally. His New York City upbringing provides additional fodder for his characters and routines. Think of all the great food combinations in an Italian/Jewish household—hot sausage and potato latkes, lasagna and pastrami, and cannoli and hamantaschen. 2 p.m., ends today. Byham Theater. 101 6th St., Cultural District.

2) Our Pens lace up their skates today against the New York Rangers in a 12:30 p.m. game. Get in a little early Pens action then head out to dinner or the South Side for some post-game festivities. 1001 Fifth Ave., Uptown.

3) Blackhat is the latest action thriller from director Michael Mann. The authorities bust out Chris Hemsworth from prison so he can help American and Chinese police capture a cyber criminal. Viola Davis also stars. And, if nothing else, the movie was filmed in the U.S., Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Malaysia … so there should be plenty of pretty scenery. (Not including Hemsworth, recently voted People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive.) Check Fandango for screens and times.
