‘Girls Only’ at CLO Cabaret; Style Week Pittsburgh Kicks Off with Cut & Sewn (Wed., 8/12/15)

1) Contrary to certain rumors, men are welcome to attend Girls Only—The Secret Comedy of Women. Seeing how readily they get the jokes may even be a good test of their gender consciousness. The sketches and songs in this revue are built around the plot device of two women comparing notes as they read through their old diaries. In such a manner, one gets a double comical dose of women’s history: the characters re-trace their personal journeys from girlhood to adulthood while conjuring up social phenomena they’ve lived through. Girls Only was conceived in Denver and has toured the country. CLO Cabaret brings it for a local run. 7:30 p.m. Runs through August 30. CLO Cabaret Theater, 655 Penn Ave., Cultural District. (MV)

2) It’s the city’s most stylish week of the year: The third annual Style Week Pittsburgh begins today with Cut & Sewn, a glitzy designer runway show. The annual fashion event showcases local and international style trendsetters, while also supporting Dress for Success Pittsburgh, a nonprofit that provides professional clothing to help disadvantaged women get work-ready. Events continue throughout the week, including an awards show tomorrow night and a free Pop-Up Marketplace in Market Square on Saturday. Tonight’s opening event at the Kelly Strayhorn Theatre features a fashion show with designs by Diana Misetic, Lana Neumeyer, Toya Taylor, and Jazmin Jackson, fashion trucks, a dance party, and more. 6 – 10 p.m. 5941 Penn Ave., East Liberty. Fantastic Four – Who isn’t shocked to learn that 10 long years have gone by without a remake of The Fantastic Four? A whole decade! Yes, 2005 brought us the first film version of the one of Marvel’s oldest comic book franchises, but after the 2007 sequel Rise of the Silver Surfer flopped, plans were shelved in hopes of happier times. If we know nothing else about Marvel Studios, we know that if there’s a chance to make some money they’d film a guy hanging wallpaper … if he’d wear a leotard doing it. So here comes this latest version; Four youngsters get caught up in a space travel experiment which goes horrible wrong and when they arrive back on Earth they’ve returned with heretofore unknown powers.

Miles Teller plays Reed, a sort of human Gumby; Kate Mara is Sue, who makes herself invisible; Michael B. Jordan plays Johnny a.k.a “The Human Torch” (you’ll never guess what he can do) and poor Jamie Bell is stuck playing Ben Grimm who can turn himself into a big rock and spends most of the movie as a CGI effect. They join forces to battle the evil Dr. Doom and pretty soon it looks like … well, whatever it always seems to look like in a Marvel movie. For screens and times check Fandango. (TH)
