1) Grit & Grace is all about opposites, hence their name and their American-Asian fusion cuisine. Newly opened last year, the restaurant has become a downtown favorite. They are especially known for their American dim sum; the dim sum even has its own menu. The way it works is customers can choose how much (or little) they want of any particular item off of the dim sum cart. Popular items include the pork belly bites with an orange chili glaze and the roasted eggplant. The lunch and dinner menus include soups, salads, noodles and other entrées. Patrons have also praised Grit & Grace’s dark wood decor, communal bar, and Sunday brunch. 535 Liberty Ave., Downtown. (CM)
2) Pittsburgh Public Theater, now in its 41st year, is often regarded as the city’s flagship professional company. The Public strives to make each season a diverse mixture of good plays, combining classics with new works in various genres. Notable numbers on this season’s schedule include a modern adaptation of Carlo Goldoni’s A Servant to Two Masters, a raucous comedy from the 1700s done in vintage Italian commedia dell’arte style; the provocative off-Broadway hit Venus in Fur by David Ives (which will close the slate next June)—and the current season opener, The Diary of Anne Frank. Many of us may have read this moving diary, by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, of the young girl hunted and eventually caught by Nazis during World War II, but few in recent years have seen the stage play. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1956 and The Public’s revival provides a fresh look at one of the enduring true stories of the previous century. 8 p.m. Continues through October 25. O’Reilly Theater, 621 Penn Ave., Cultural District. (MV)
3) The baseball season is growing shorter and there’s only four home games remaining for the Pirates. None is as important as this home stand that ends tonight against the Division leading St. Louis Cardinals, every game the Bucs win against the Cards doubly winnows the gap between the two teams. As of press time, 3 games separate the Cardinals and Pirates. This game tonight offers no premiums or promotions, none are needed. 7:05 p.m. PNC Park, 115 Federal St., North Shore.
