Shelf Life String Band Plays Park House Bluegrass Jam; Ketel One Wednesdays at Olive or Twist; (Wed., 10/28/15)

Members of The Shelf Life String Band bring bluegrass to the Deutschtown Music Festival.

1) Check out the Bluegrass Jam at the Park House, which bills itself as Pittsburgh’s oldest and friendliest tavern. The Shelf Life String Band hosts this weekly event where you can relax and enjoy the music or join the jam. Either way, Yuengling pints are only $2 from 9 p.m. to midnight. Jam starts at 9 p.m.  Enjoy complimentary peanuts and popcorn. 403 E. Ohio St., North Side.

2) Celebrate Over the Hump Day with Ketel One Wednesdays at Olive or Twist in the heart of the Cultural District. Named one of Pittsburgh’s best restaurants for cocktails the past several years, Olive or Twist has a martini bar that is a perfect place to wind down for Happy Hour, dinner before a show, or a post-performance nightcap. You can enjoy Ketel One tonight with $7 cocktails, dirty martinis, and regular martinis. Get there early for Happy Hour, 4 – 6  p.m., when it’s $1 off all draft beers, $5 for a glass of Chardonnay or Cabernet, and $2 off specialty martinis. There’s also half-price calamari, Buffalo Chicken Spread, and nachos. Olive or Twist also features one of Pittsburgh’s best bartenders, Linda, who is friendly and knowledgeable.  Sounds like a fun and inexpensive outing. 140 6th St., Downtown.

3) The Intern – Have you been wondering what Nancy Meyer’s been up to recently? This writer/director is the purveyor of a certain sort of picture which might best be described as “Troubles in Suburbia.” Her titles include It’s Complicated, in which Meryl Streep had to choose between Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, all the while running a muffin shop; Something’s Got to Give in which Diane Keaton had to decide between Jack Nicholson and Keanu Reeves, all the while tending her successful playwriting career and The Holiday in which Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet swap gorgeous homes and start dating Jude Law and Jack Black. Well here she comes again with The Intern. Robert DeNiro plays the title character, a businessman so bored with his retirement that he agrees to intern at a new online fashion start-up, run by Anne Hathaway. No, they don’t fall in love, thank God (if it was a Woody Allen film, they would) but Bob goes from intern to mentor and helps Anne sort out her chaotic business and even more chaotic love life. Rene Russo, Adam DeVine and Andrew Rannells co-star. Check Fandango for screens and times.
