1) The Nice Guys – Of course it’s lunacy to judge movies by their trailers, but the promo for The Nice Guys is getting huge buzz and people are predicting big things for this match-up of Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling as two low-lifes trying to solve a crime in 1970’s Los Angeles. Shane Black directs, from a script he wrote with Anthony Bagarozzi, and it’s described as a mystery action comedy buddy film. Not a lot of them around. Gosling is a down-on-his-luck private investigator who teams up (reluctantly) with a snarling enforcer played by Crowe. The two begin looking into the death of a faded porn star and their investigation unearths a national, if not international, conspiracy. Matt Bomer, Kim Basinger, Ty Simpkins, Margaret Qualley, and Keith David also show up. The R rating might limit the box office appeal, (Hollywood hates R-rated comedies) but advance word is hugely positive and both Crowe and Gosling are favorites in the industry. Check Fandango for screens and times. (TH)
2) Do you want to go see the battlin’ Buccos play the Arizona Diamondbacks but your dog is giving you the “we don’t spend enough time together” look. Don’t fret the Pirates got you covered with Pup Night, aka bring your dog to the pirate game night. There’s also a giveaway tonight—for dogs—a Pirate disposable bag dispenser! 7:05 p.m. PNC Park, 115 Federal St., North Shore.
3) Getaway to the tropics with a trip to Brillobox for Tropical Tuesdays. There you’ll feel the trade winds (breeze from the fans) soothing your overdue vacation bones. Here’s a sampling of their specials: $3 select craft cans, $4 frozen drinks, $10 California bubble bath, $10 Eva Peron, $7 Fernet con cola, and $6 Coronita Margaveza. You can also sop up the island drinks with $7 pineapple soy-glazed chicken or tofu skewers served with Caribbean sweet potato salad. Shoes and shirt required. 5 p.m. – 2 a.m. 4104 Penn Ave., Bloomfield.
