Dave Chappelle Performs Second Night of Three-Night Run; City Theater Stages ‘The Lion’ (Thurs., 5/26/16)

1) Tonight is the second night of a three-night performance run by one of the nation’s top comedians, Dave Chappelle. Chappelle was born in Washington, D.C., and started performing stand up comedy in clubs at the age of 14. After graduating from High School Chappelle moved to New York City, working the comedy clubs there. He was soon recognized as a hot, new talent and got work in movies and television including: Robin Hood Men in Tights,  “Buddies,” and The Nutty Professor. He parlayed his comedy success into his own comedy specials and even a self-titled television series, “Chappelle’s Show.” One of the funniest skits on his show was the tale of Prince challenging and playing Eddie Murphy’s brother Charlie to a game of basketball.The game was a landslide win by Prince and his crew. Prince loved it and backed up Charlie Murphy’s recount of it. 2) Theater fans needing a vacation from dystopian satire and postmodern irony might do well to catch Benjamin Scheuer’s The Lion. Scheuer, a singer/songwriter based in New York, has created a one-man stage musical that is said to be warmly humorous and unashamedly uplifting (see the video above). And before you say “Yeah, yeah, for that we could stay home and watch Julie Andrews movies,” consider that the show has been a hit with discerning avant-garde audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe festival, off-Broadway, and elsewhere. The Lion is an autobiographical piece. Scheuer sings and talks about confronting various misfortunes in his life, from his father’s untimely death to his own diagnosis with advanced Hodgkin’s lymphoma. (The performer discussed that episode—musically, of course—in a TEDx talk, and he’s currently cancer-free.) City Theatre has Scheuer and his multi-award-winning The Lion here in Pittsburgh for a three-week run. 8 p.m. Performances through June 5. 1300 Bingham St., South Side. (MV)

3) The Pens face off against the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight in an 8 p.m. playoff game at the Consol Energy Center. It’s game seven of the third round of the NHL’s Eastern Conference Championship.Winner take all.  Let’s go Pens! 1001 Fifth Ave., Uptown.

4) Our battlin’ Buccos play the Arizona Diamondbacks today in a 12:35 p.m. game, the last in a three-game series against the D-backs. Does it seem like the Pirates have had a home game almost every day lately. Well they have. The Pirates have played every day—including a make up rain out game from Sunday to Monday—since May 16. There is no rest for them after this afternoon’s game as they leave to play the Texas Rangers tomorrow in Arlington, Texas. Good Luck Bucs! 115 Federal St., North Shore.
