Don Mclean Brings ‘American Pie’ to Jergel’s; Three Rivers Film Festival Kicks Off (Wed., 11/16/16)

1) “So bye, bye Miss American Pie, drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry” was all over the airwaves in ’71 when Don McLean‘s American Pie album, with a single of the same name, rose to the number one spot on the U.S., U.K., and Canadian album charts. “American Pie” has somewhat cryptic lyrics whose meaning many people have been trying to discern for years. It is generally regarded that the phrase “the day the music died” refers to the ’59 plane crash that killed three of the top acts in the burgeoning rock ‘n roll genre—Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper (Jiles Perry Richardson, Jr.). McLean had success with other songs, though none as big as “American Pie.” He’ll be performing at Jergel’s Rhythm Grille. 8 p.m. 285 Northgate Dr., Warrendale.

2) The 35th Annual Three Rivers Film Festival begins tonight. The festival is a partnership between Film Pittsburgh and PF/PCA. The Festival brings top independent films to several Pittsburgh screens. The opening night film is The Freedom to Marry. A film about the trials and tribulations of the LGBT’s campaign for the right to a civil marriage. Focusing mainly on Pittsburgh native Evan Wolfson, credited with starting the marriage equality movement over thirty years ago. Screening is at the August Wilson Center beginning at 7 p.m.  This year’s schedule presents 31 films, including narratives, documentaries and shorts. 3) Rising metalcore band Crown the Empire pulls into Mr. Smalls tonight for a show. The band—formed in Dallas, Texas, in 2010—recently released the album Retrograde which has seen good chart success. No matter who your candidate was in this past election, this is a good chance to burn some angst off. Also on the bill is blessthefall, New Years Day, Too Close To Touch, and Light Up The Sky. 6:30 p.m. 400 Linclon Ave., Millvale.
