Texture Contemporary Ballet’s ‘Uncharted’ at New Hazlett; Kelly-Strayhorn Has Exhalation Dance’s ‘Equinox’ (Sat., 3/23/19)

1) The company whose name says it all—Texture Contemporary Ballet—presents a show of new dances by four choreographers. Alan Obuzor, Texture’s artistic director, has created a meta-piece about the process of creating a ballet. Other choreographers are Kelsey Bartman, Alexandra Tiso, and guest artist Christopher Bandy. Expect a variety of music, including Coldplay. The four-piece program goes by the title Uncharted and it’s at the New Hazlett Theater. 8 p.m. Performances Continue through March 24. 6 Allegheny Square East, North Side. (MV)

2) Of all the arts, dance may be the hardest to pursue as a career. It’s like a pro sport: tough on the body and favoring the young. Pittsburgh’s Exhalations Dance Theatre is a unique company, founded for people who’ve chosen other lines of work but still want to dance and perform at a high level. The company’s artistic director, Lea Fosbenner, is a professional dancer and choreographer, while the founding exec director, Katie Mann, is a clinical pharmacist, dancer, and choreographer. Exhalations stages two modern-dance shows per year. This year the show for early spring is titled Equinox. 8 p.m. Runs through March 24. Kelly Strayhorn Theater, 5941 Penn Ave., East Liberty. (MV)

3) RealTime Interventions and the Office of Public Art are holding the debut of “Khūrākī”, a series of four live cultural events created by artist Molly Rice in collaboration with a group of recently-resettled Afghan refugees in Pittsburgh. The first of the programs will will center around traditions of the Afghan new year (Nowruz) and the women’s personal stories of home. Rice asked the refugee women what they would like to have the event highlight. They said, “let’s make it a celebration–of our music, our food, our people, our culture. Let’s show Afghanistan as Americans have never seen it. 75% of the proceeds go to the women so they can start food related businesses. So that’s what we’re trying to do.” It is being held at New Sun Rising (Millvale Moose). 7 p.m. 112 E Sherman St., Millvale.
