Real/Time Interventions Breaks the Virtual Fourth Wall with Free ‘Associate’ (Tues., 5/26/20)

Real/Time Interventions—the theater-and-public-experience company with a name that sounds like they will send you to rehab, but they won’t—returns to action with a free online production titled Associate. Like other Real/Time events, Associate is audience-interactive and will unfold unpredictably in real time. Three artists will be featured onscreen: musician Ben Barson, multidisciplinary artist Christine Bethea, and sculptor James Simon. Responding to questions and prompts from both the Real/Time team and the virtual audience, they’ll create a rambling jam that illustrates how they use free association in their work. Then, near the end of the one-hour piece, a special Mystery Artist will create something new from that. 

The video clip above highlights a previous Real/Time event, 2017’s “true-crime cabaret concert” ANGELMAKERS: Songs for Female Serial Killers. The company’s best known piece thus far is THE SAINTS TOUR, a bus-and-parade event that’s been staged in the streets of Louisville, New York, and Braddock. For the New York production, in the West Village, noted theater artist Taylor Mac played The Tourguide and the director was Rachel Chavkin, later a Tony winner for directing Hadestown. Real/Time Interventions is led by co-artistic directors Molly Rice and Rusty Thelin.
