1) “One-man jam band.” The phrase may appear oxymoronic. That is, until one sees Keller Williams live, playing songs like “Freeker by the Speaker.” The Virginia native, active since 1991, often loops guitar, bass, and percussion while playing solo, creating the effect of a full band. He’s also recorded, performed, and toured with bluegrass group the String Cheese Incident, and he’s played in a number of additional ensembles. 2019’s Speed is by Keller and the Keels (the Keels are Jenny and Larry, who are wife and husband, bassist and guitarist, respectively). Williams and the HillBenders brought PettyGrass, bluegrass interpretations of Tom Petty songs, to Pittsburgh in 2019. He and Love Canon were supposed to bring Grateful Grass—bluegrass interpretations of Grateful Dead songs—this year, but it was canceled due to COVID-19. Williams instead will perform at the Starlight Drive-In. Cabinet, a bluegrass band from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, opens. 7:30 p.m. 1985 N. Main St. Ext., Butler. (CM)
2) There are drive-in movies, so why not drive-in live entertainment? Pittsburghers get to try the concept at the city’s first and perhaps only Drive-In Arts Festival. Staged at Hazelwood Green—the sprawling new multi-use development site in where else but Hazelwood—the festival is produced by City Theatre. And though it doesn’t include live theater, just about every other performing art is on the two-week schedule: comedy, dance, magic, and music in forms from classical to hip-hop. Each night is devoted to a single featured act or set of related acts and the artists are Pittsburgh-rooted. Check the link above for the night(s) you want, buy tix in advance, and arrive with up to four in your vehicle.
Performing tonight is nationally known magician and Pittsburgh native, Lee Terbosic. Presented by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.
Institutions collaborating with City Theatre for the Drive-In Arts Festival include the August Wilson African American Cultural Center, City of Asylum, MCG Jazz, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and WYEP-FM. Doors at 7 p.m., show at 8 p.m. Main entry to Hazelwood Green is at 4734 Second Ave., Hazelwood. (MV)
