Avett Brothers in Concert at Stage AE; Off the WALL Opens ‘What Kind of Woman’; Cultural District Gallery Crawl (Fri., 9/23/22)

1) The Avett Brothers mix the light romanticism of early rock and roll with the craftsmanship of a Paul Simon-like singer/songwriter and add a dash of the hoedown spirit of old-school Americana. Built around the nucleus of brothers Scott and Seth, the North Carolina band rode to prominence in the folk-rock revival that also brought you Fleet Foxes and Mumford and Sons. Since they partnered with producer du jour Rick Rubin on 2009’s I and Love and You, the Avetts have been unstoppable on their path to mega-success. Their triumph can be traced by their ascension through Pittsburgh venues: In 10 years, they’ve gone from a small place at the Three Rivers Arts Festival to filling up Stage AE. The Avett Brothers even created the theme song for the popular PBS series “A Chef’s Life.” Their latest album is 2019’s Closer than Together. WHAT KIND OF WOMAN by Abbe Tanenbaum. Off the WALL productions. September 23 – October 1. 

Abbe Tanenbaum, an Erie, Pennsylvania, native, is an actress, writer and creative artist who now resides in the Mourne Mountains of Northern Ireland.

2) Premiering this month in the Pittsburgh area is a new play about what it was like for women seeking abortions during the time before Roe v. Wade. What Kind of Woman, by American theater artist Abbe Tanenbaum, was in development for several years and now takes on new relevance with the overturning of Roe. Tanenbaum was moved to create the play when she saw letters that had been written to an underground women’s health group in New York City in the early 1970s. The group provided safe access to abortions, and the letters were from women begging for the service because of desperate circumstances in their lives and homes. What Kind of Woman is presented by off the WALL productions. The actors are Tanenbaum herself and Virginia Wall Gruenert, off the WALL’s artistic director. Later this fall the play will move to New York for an off-Broadway run at Nancy Manocherian’s the cell theater. But to see it here, reserve tickets for What Kind of Woman on the off the WALL website. 3) Gallery Crawl in the Cultural District is happening tonight; it features visual arts, musical performances, and interactive exhibits. All events are free and take place at a variety of galleries, art spaces, and venues. Some galleries offer drinks and hors d’oeuvres. What a great way to sample some of Pittsburgh’s great arts and entertainment! 5:30 – 10 p.m., Cultural District.
