1) When A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, by Robert L. Freedman and Steven Lutvak, won last year’s Tony Award for Best Musical, it wasn’t the first time the underlying story has been made into a hit. Aficionados of old movies will recall the 1949 comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets, with Alec Guinness playing eight roles and getting bumped off in most of them. That movie and the modern musical are derived from the same obscure novel, Israel Rank: Autobiography of a Criminal—but while literary genealogy can be fun, the offspring are funnier. A Gentleman’s Guide has been pronounced seriously humorous. It’s about a distant relative of an English earl who plots to ascend to the earldom by eliminating the closer kin. Over the course of his quest, he pretends to be gay (“It’s Better with a Man”), dispatches people with weapons ranging from a barbell to a swarm of bees, and much more. Please don’t try any of this at home; just watch the national touring company act it out. 7:30 p.m. Performances through November 22. Benedum Center, 237 7th Ave., Cultural District. (MV)
2) The 33 – On August 5, 2010 near Copiapó in Chile, the San José Mine copper/gold mine collapsed and entombed 33 miners. It was 17 days before the miners were discovered to still be alive and another two months before they could be rescued. It was a news story that circled the globe and the whole world followed the rescue efforts. And now comes the movie version with an international cast including Antonio Banderas, Juliette Binoche, James Brolin, Lou Diamond Phillips, Gabriel Byrne and Bob Gunton. Check Fandango for screens and times. (TH)
3) The Pens are back in town from a trip to New Jersey to play the Devils and take on the Minnesota Wild in a 7:30 p.m. game tonight at the Consol Energy Center. 1001 Fifth Ave., Uptown.
